Transformative Lessons: The Unexpected Benefits of the Learning Journey

Transformative Lessons: The Unexpected Benefits of the Learning Journey

The Power of Design: A Journey Begins

"Design is not just about creating; it's about solving problems with elegance and simplicity."

I’ve always been drawn to design. While I wouldn’t call myself an expert, the act of creating something through design has always sparked a different kind of thinking in me. My approach has always been straightforward: keep it simple and sharp. In a previous article, I discussed how B2B software companies are thriving by embracing this minimalist approach, focusing on core problems rather than getting lost in unnecessary complexity.

The First Steps: COVID Lockdown and a Seed of an Idea

"In the quiet of the lockdown, the desire to build something meaningful took root."

During the COVID lockdown in 2020, with the world on pause, I found myself with an urge to create something tangible. I started working on a web app, a hobby project born out of the need to break the monotony. As a ServiceDesk consultant at Freshworks, I was no stranger to technology, but my coding knowledge was basic at best. I designed a sleek service desk dashboard using Canva, but soon realized that turning this design into a functional product required coding skills that I didn’t have.

While I was comfortable with tools like Canva and Photoshop, Figma proved to be a challenge. I tried to dive into Figma, but the learning curve was steep, and I quickly felt overwhelmed. Frustrated, I returned to Canva to finish my design, but it remained just that - a design. I had no idea how to bring it to life as a functioning web app. Despite signing up for platforms like Heroku and watching countless tutorials, nothing seemed to stick. The process felt daunting, and I eventually shelved the project.

Rediscovering the Process: The Role of AI

"Sometimes, all it takes is the right tool to reignite the spark."

My interest in the project was reignited in November 2023 when I discovered ChatGPT. Seeing its potential for generating content, I decided to give it a shot with my web app idea. However, the steps it provided were still too complex for someone with my limited coding background. I was tempted to give up again. My goal was never to create a full-fledged product; I simply wanted to understand the process of building a web app. This curiosity stemmed from my work with SaaS businesses and the insights I’d gained from interacting with various product teams.

Then, in June 2024, I stumbled upon a video in a WhatsApp group that changed everything. The video, shared by a marketer, demonstrated how to use Claude 3.5 to build a simple one-page web app. It was like finding a missing piece of a puzzle. Motivated, I began experimenting with Claude 3.5, asking it questions and exploring the possibilities. Four years had passed since my initial idea, and my life had changed significantly-I had switched jobs, learned new tools, got married, and even moved to a new country. But this time, I approached the project with a focus on the process rather than the end product.

The Learning Curve: From Design to Code

"Turning a vision into reality is less about the destination and more about embracing the journey."

Inspired by the bentobox-style presentations from recent Apple events, I decided to build a simple front-end portfolio to showcase some of my music compositions. I designed a homepage in Canva and used Claude to generate the corresponding React code. To my surprise, Claude not only understood the design style but also provided detailed instructions on how to bring it to life. It suggested libraries, explained how to use VS Code, and even guided me through installing Node.js-steps that no other tool or tutorial had ever laid out so clearly.

This time, I fully immersed myself in the process. I spent hours experimenting, making mistakes, and learning along the way. The thrill wasn’t just in seeing the final product but in understanding how each piece fit together. Although the code was generated by Claude, I found myself deeply engaged in every step, from tweaking the design to troubleshooting errors. This hands-on experience was what I had been craving all along-a chance to learn by doing.

The Challenges of Deployment: Embracing the Process

"The real reward wasn’t in the finished product, but in the process of getting there."

After I completed the design and coding, the next challenge was deployment. I managed to push the front-end code to GitHub, but setting up the backend proved to be a significant hurdle. I spent an entire weekend trying to deploy the app using Heroku and AWS, but ran into issues at every turn. Even with the help of my wife, who has a background in software testing and development, the process was frustratingly slow.

But this experience taught me something valuable: the process itself is the real teacher. Each setback forced me to dig deeper, learn new tools, and find creative solutions. I realized that it’s okay to struggle and seek help when needed. The goal wasn’t just to get the app running but to understand every step along the way, from the initial design to the final deployment.

Reflection: The Journey is the Reward

"Sometimes, the true value lies not in what you build, but in the knowledge you gain along the way."

In the end, the web app I created wasn’t the highlight of this journey. The real reward was the process of building it-the learning, the problem-solving, and the joy of seeing something come to life from scratch. This project reminded me that the journey is often more important than the destination. Through every challenge and every triumph, I rediscovered my passion for learning and embraced the process of creation, which is something I’ll carry with me far beyond this project.
